
The Mogao Caves is located in Dunhuang city, Gansu Province, Northwest China. Mogao Caves are commonly known as the Caves of a Thousand Buddhas. Today, 492 caves still stand, containing some 2,100 colored statues and 45,000 square meters of murals. These murals, if joined together, would cover a length of 30 kilometers. These well preserved caves span a period of one thousand years. The paintings themselves are a priceless resource documenting the changes in lifestyle, religion and culture over a thousand-year period. In 1987 Mogao Caves was listed as a World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.
